structuralism and post-structuralism
Part 1
1) Structuralism = a theoretical perspective that emphasises the existence of universal structures underlying the surface differences and assumed randomness of various cultures, stories and media texts.
2) The binary oppositions are the messages around 2 directly contrasting concepts, ideas or characters to create conflict, drama and meaning.
3) Genre and auteur theory link to structuralism because they are also examples of a structuralist way of analysing texts.
4) Post-structuralism = how external structures can affect meaning. For example, post-structural analysis may look at how attitudes towards gender or ethnicity in society affect the audiences' understanding of a text and the meaning it generates.
5) In mt opinion, it is a combination of both which take part in what the audience may perceive and understand, also how they look at it and what they decide to take in.
Part 2
Structuralist:
The trailer conveys a comedic, hero-story genre where it is easy to break down the type of people the characters are. The family are a classic American, stereotypical family with a mum, dad and 2 children, one son and one daughter.
Post-structuralist:
The father is a father who tries to protect his daughter which leads to arguments or fights, this caring trait and protectiveness of the father doesn't follow stereotypical views. The emotions the father shows also does not follow stereotypical views and judgements.
