Part 1



Preferred readings:

- fingerprints showing crime
- about his past/background
- an inspirational poster
- showing how to make it from nothing
- to show 50 cent as a tough character
- The coloured Os to show bullet wounds

Negotiated readings:

- the 2 images indicate his past and present lie
- his facial expressions showing anger or seriousness
- dull colour scheme to show bleak history
- might be limited edition product
- slogan shows 50 cent confidence and strength
- slogan shows 50 cent proud where he came from

Oppositional readings:

- may seen to be offensive to black people
- may be deemed stereotypical
- may have negative influence to kids
- may show the wrong images of bullets to younger children
- may degrade more fortunate children




Preferred readings:

- showing caramel
- showing peanuts
- shows the chocolate
- trying to show how nice the snickers is
- showing it satisfies hunger


Negotiated readings:

- the caramel is sweet and creamy
- the peanuts are crunchy
- the chocolate is nice and soft
- you should eat snickers when your hungry

Oppositional readings:

- the caramel and peanuts do not taste nice together 
- the chocolate and peanuts aren't nice together
- if you don't like any of the elements may put audience off trying the product
- the interior image may not be appealing to audience

Part 2:

2) Encoding = constructing a message using a shared code and language. Decoding = defining a coded language.
3) Stuart hall criticised the SMCR model because he didn't believe the message had a fixed meaning encoded by the sender to be passively accepted by the receiver.
4) Hall's circuit of communication model was a non-linear model that could feed back into each other. They could work independently of one another in the construction of meaning and the uses audience make of what they consume would therefore vary.
5) The fact sheet says that Hall's reception theory challenged the idea that audiences all understood media texts in a broadly similar way.
6) Hall's reception theory is not a straight forward, one-way process.
